Rangamati issues landslide warning amid continued rainfall

The Rangamati district administration has issued a landslide warning for residents living at the foot of vulnerable hills following intermittent rainfall since Saturday and urged them to move to safer shelters.

An executive magistrate of the district administration, along with officials from the Fire Service and Civil Defence, conducted a public awareness campaign this afternoon, using loudspeakers to alert residents in high-risk areas.

Rangamati Nezarat Deputy Collector (NDC) Sheikh Salman said continuous rainfall has heightened the risk of landslides in the district’s hilly areas.

The district administration has advised people living at the foot of vulnerable hills to take shelter in safe places, he said.

The warning was issued in the Rupnagar, Shimultali and Muslim Para areas of the town.

During the campaign, residents were specifically urged not to stay near vulnerable hillsides and to relocate to safer locations during heavy rainfall, he added.

Kye Chi Nu Marma, senior observer at the Rangamati Meteorological Observatory, said 67 mm of rainfall was recorded in the district in 24 hours until 6:00am today.

An additional 11 mm of rainfall was recorded between 6:00am and 6:00pm today, he said.

Rangamati has a history of deadly landslides during the monsoon season. On June 13, 2017, a devastating landslide in the district claimed 120 lives, including five army personnel. The following year, 11 people were killed in another landslide in Naniarchar upazila.
