Environment Minister seeks UK and GCA’s assistance in Climate adaptation actions

Minister of Environment, Forest & Climate Change Md. Shahab Uddin said the NAP implementation plan has an ambitious investment target of 230 billion US dollars that must be harnessed at an accelerated pace from international climate funds.

Environment Minister said these at a Inter-Ministerial Roundtable on Adaptation Action in Bangladesh held Sunday at Bangladesh Foreign Service Academy.

He said Bangladesh government has also approved the Mujib Climate Prosperity Plan (2022-2041) very recently and aims to shift Bangladesh’s trajectory from vulnerability to resilience to prosperity. The GCA, as a solutions broker to accelerate action and support for adaptation solutions, from the international to the local, and will be an important adaptation partner for Bangladesh. The Minister believes that, through its technical assistance, GCA will support the government of Bangladesh to continue being the global leader in adaptation action.

The Environment Minister said, there is a clear social, moral and economic imperative to urgently adapt to the changing climate. Bangladesh has taken various steps to deliver the ambitious adaptation agenda. The National Adaptation Plan (2023-2050) is a roadmap and framework to implement medium and long-term adaptation actions in Bangladesh.

The NAP envisions are building a climate-resilient nation through effective adaptation strategies. It will develop climate-resilient agriculture, infrastructure and other socio-economic sectors through implementing inclusive and ecosystem-based adaptation, improved governance, enhanced climate finance and transformative capacity-building, and innovation.

He hopes, the UK Government can be instrumental in achieving the identified actions of the NAP.

Director General of Multilateral Economic Wing of Ministry of Foreign Affairs Faiyaz Murshid Kazi moderated the roundtable.

 

In the open discussion session representatives from different national and international organisations delivered speeches regarding adaptation actions in Bangladesh. Earlier Deputy Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change Habibun Nahar was present in a signing ceremony of the “Bangladesh-the United Kingdom Accord on Climate Change” held at the Foreign Service Academy.
